The exceptional concentration in the grapes in 2000 was not only achieved in the old vines, which produce the first wine; in fact, all the plots produced very ripe and concentrated grapes. The fabulous potential of this vintage led us paradoxically to make a strict selection at the blending so that Château Margaux 2000 would have the most perfect expression possible. Naturally, this very rigorous selection was also of direct benefit to Pavillon Rouge, which was made richer by very good wines which did not go into the Château Margaux. At the same time, it was freed of lesser wines which were reserved for the third wine. The 2000 Pavillon Rouge has the complexity and density of a first wine, and it certainly has the ageing potential. It certainly is the reason why it may still be too young to drink; let’s wait a few years more, and in the meantime, let’s enjoy the 1999, 2001 and 2002 Pavillon Rouge. (December 2008)
Blend: 59% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 35% merlot and 2% petit verdot. Production: 50% of the harvest. Colour Deep red. Intense. One of the most intense I have seen so far. Nose Clean. Intense. Delicate. Notes of cocoa and ripe fruits. Almost sweet. Palate It is extremely charming and full of tactile gentleness. This wine melts in the mouth like a mousse. The tannic concentration has never been so stong and nevertheless the gentleness has never been so intense. One of the best Pavillons I have ever tasted.
The 2000 Pavillon Rouge, exhibits a medium/dark ruby color with some lightening at the edge, notes of cedar, spice box, black cherries, and currants in very evolved style at full maturity.
The second wine of Château Margaux first appeared in the 19th century and took on its present name, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, in 1908. After vanishing from the scene between the 1930s and the 1970s, its production was started up again as soon as André Mentzelopoulos took over the estate in 1977, and has continued to grow in order to improve the quality of the first wine. For the last few years, a third wine has in turn appeared to enhance the quality of Pavillon Rouge. It is made from wines which were not selected at the blending to go into Château Margaux.
