The Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce led the classification of 1855 at the request of Emperor Napoleon III. Apart from Château Haut Brion (Graves), it is made up of wines from the Médoc, Barsac and Sauternes (St.-Emilion and Pomerol didn't have the reputation they have today). The classification was divided into five rungs, known as "Growth", mostly based on price. The only revolution in the history came in 1973, when Château Mouton Rothschild was elevated to first growth rank.

5ème Cru Classé
Owner: Domaines François-Xavier Borie
Manager: François-Xavier Borie
Cellar master: Philippe Gouze
Vineyard manager: Marc Duvocelle
Oenologist: Jacques et Eric Boissenot
5th classified growth in 1855. In 1942, the vineyard of Château Batailley is divided between the Borie brothers Marcel and François, giving the Château Batailley and the Château Haut-Batailley. François augmented the estate by buying some vines from Duhart-Milon in 1951. At his death in 1953, his daughter Françoise de Brest-Borie inherited the estate, but she left the management to her brother Jean-Eugène Borie and later to his son François-Xavier Borie. The vinification and aging of wines are carried out with the same techniques, the same care and the same spirit as those of the other estates of the Borie family. The vineyard is located near Saint-Julien. The influence of this proximity may be felt, as we find in this growth a charming grace, a delicacy and a touch of femininity which are unusual for a Pauillac. Second wine : Tour d'Aspic.
